Glass Recycling Services
Every time you put a glass container in a bottle bank or kerbside box you make a difference. If you don’t recycle your bottles or jars they would be dumped at a landfill site and never used again. But with a little effort these bottles and jars can now enter into the recycling system and will not be wasted.
Large amounts of fuel are used and the combustion of fossil fuels for making glass. The fuel produces carbon dioxide – a greenhouse gas. In 2002 the glass industry consumed a total of 8611,000,000 kWh of energy including electricity and carbon dioxide emissions totaled 1.8 million tonnes from the fossil fuels burnt in their factories.
In the case of bottles and jars, up to 80% of the total mixture can be made from reclaimed scrap glass, called “cullet”. If recycled glass is used to make new bottles and jars, the energy needed in the furnace is greatly reduced. After accounting for the transport and processing needed, 315kg of CO2 is saved per tonne of glass melted.
Not all glass is manufactured through the same process, so that is why light bulbs, dishes and window glass cannot be recycled.
