Batteries

From the 1st January 2010 you will be responsible for the cost of collection and recovery of waste batteries in the UK. There are definitions of your role depending on your place in the supply chain:

  • * If you manufacture or import batteries and place them on the UK market, you are considered the Producer.
  • * If you sell portable batteries to end users professionally (Distributors) you are required to take back waste portable batteries free of charge.

Further Information

There are a number of different types of household batteries used for a variety of purposes. The three main types are:

  • * Wet-cell: Lead acid batteries used to power vehicles and by industry.
  • * Dry-cell non-rechargeable: These are the most common types of household battery.

General purpose disposable household batteries, including:

  • 1. Zinc carbon used in low drainage appliances such as torches, clocks, shavers and radios.
  • 2. Zinc chloride used in similar applications.
  • 3. Alkaline manganese used in personal stereos, radio-cassette players. Less prone to leaking than the above two types and longer lasting.

Primary button cells:

  • * Mercuric oxide used in batteries for hearing aids, pacemakers, photographic equipment.
  • * Zinc air – an alternative to mercuric oxide button cells – used for hearing aids and radio pagers.
  • * Silver oxide used for electronic watches and calculators.
  • * Lithium used for watches and photographic equipment.
  • * Dry-cell rechargeable – general purpose rechargeable batteries for the above uses, and also including Nickel cadmium, Nickel metal hydride and Lithium-Ion batteries used in power tools, cordless appliances, mobile phones etc.
  • * Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries represent one of the fastest growing sectors in the battery market. Used for cordless power tools, personal stereos, portable telephones, lap-top computers, shavers, motorised toys etc, with a life of 4-5 years.
  • * Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are a less environmentally harmful alternative to NiCd and tend to have a longer life.
  • * Lithium ion (Li-Ion) batteries have a greater energy storage capacity than NiCd and NiMH batteries.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that has been a popular building material since the 1950s. Asbestos was classified as a hazardous waste in 2005 as its millions of tiny fibres can be harmful if breathed in. Asbestos should be handled very carefully and by specialists if possible.

Aerosols

Recycling aerosols at the point of arising is the best method of Aerosol Pre-treatment. The Aerosol Piercing & Filtration units will convert Hazardous Waste into non-Hazardous Waste with an immediate saving in disposal costs and enhances the ISO 14001 status of the user.

Waste Compliance Regulations now class the action of Piercing & Filtration of Aerosols using British Standard Carbon Filters as a Low Risk Activity. Pre-Treatment Regulations brought in during October 2007 now require all waste to be pre-treated prior to disposal and our Aerosol Piercing & Filtration Units assist in conforming to this requirement. Recycling aerosols releases around 25,000 tonnes of Steel and 4,500 tonnes of Aluminium into the metal recycling stream.

Paint Containers

Some paints and related products (paint thinners/strippers) include hazardous ingredients. Paint recycling reduces the incidence of paint entering the waterways and landfill sites. Paint should never be poured down drains or directly in a water course, as this can also be harmful to wildlife. Although latex paint is less harmful than oil-based paint to the environment and public health, all types of paint should be handled and disposed of properly. You may be able to put unused paint to good use. Check www.communityrepaint.org.uk for more details.
